Gil’s Realm
Gil Bruvel’s work opens the realms of imaginative experience, deep personal mythology, exploration and visions to create a link between the conscious and the unconscious in an attempt to get closer to the mystery of the transformative processwhat is engendered by growth and metamorphosis in the world of human experience. His canvases merge physical and organic forms to produce an amalgamation that is part human, part idea, part consciousness, and part spirit. |

Quote of the Month
“Surrealism is destructive, but it destroys only what it considers to be shackles limiting our vision”
Salvador Dali (1904-1989)
Dali had a huge impact on the earliest part of Gil's art, his thinking & creativity. For him, Dali offered an expression of higher ideals in conjunction with the permission, executed in the subject matter of his work, to allow one's self to work outside of the box. |

"It’s a Matter of Time” - 1987 Oil on board, 10 1/4" x 26 5/8"
Greetings! Gil has so many paintings with "time" in the title, in addition to paintings and sculpture that reference the notion of time, we thought, as one season passes into the next, we’d look at this theme in Gil’s work. We hope you enjoy this motif mini-tour.
As always, feel free to drop us a line!

“Time Transfers” - 1999 - Oil on Canvas, 30 7/8" x 30 3/8"
Limited Edition Print Available
Time is a predominant motif in Gil’s work. Whether a painting overtly refers to Time in its title or imagines time in the form of a clock face somewhere inside its frame, Time is ever-present. Rather than indicating an artist’s preoccupation with the passage of time or time-keeping, Gil says he uses time pieces as a motif to point to the timeless quality of art. “The clocks are a contrasting element,” he muses, “and work to continue the dialog between imagination (which is timeless) and the concrete structures and ‘realities’ created by humans (which, by design, come with an expiration date).”

“Art puts me in a timeless space,” he says, noting, like many artists, that when he is working, “things slow down” and he “stops thinking of the outside world.” “Here,” he says, “my ideas are most real.”.
In an effort to further explore imaginative experience as what Gil calls “the real reality”, he works with Time and Timelessness to collapse not only the distance between the artist and the art, but between the viewer and the art, as well: “When I am in the timeless bubble, the viewer is there too.”

Part of Gil’s artistic vocabulary is to use clocks with human faces that work to represent “the effect time has on our emotional states.” Continuing, he says, “Isn't it obvious that everything about human lives is about the perception of time?”
He continues, “It's relative whether it's fast or slow, whether we stop time due to an incredible experience or with our suffering which makes it lengthy and tedious. I see everything in human life related to time.” And, “the face is a natural vehicle for time. It can be symbolic of day and night (for the passage of time), or represent emotions and our response to the outside world and the part we play in the universe.”
When these elements come together---the clocks and faces---says Gil, they become “masksthe reality we are choosing.” In this way, says Gil, we’re all timeless travelers, moving from one imaginative space to the next
